Medicines

Today, drugs are obtained from a wide variety of sources. Many medicines were developed from substances in nature, and even today they are still extracted from plants.

Some drugs are made in laboratories, mixing a series of chemicals. Others, like penicillin, are by-products made by organisms like fungi. And a few of them are obtained through biological engineering, introducing genes into bacteria, which are responsible for manufacturing the desired substance.
